Breast Implant Options

Breast implants are as diverse as the patients receiving them. While it is important to have a goal in mind, we also remind you that there are a variety of different factors that go into your surgeon’s plan, including height and weight. Our surgeons will discuss the right options for you during your consultation. We determine the right type of Breast Implant Option by assessing four categories: size, shape, material, and profile.

Implant size

Bra sizes vary between manufacturers and cup size is not always the best indicator for your desired result. We use grams or cubic centimeters (cc) to measure the volume of breast implants and match selected implant dimensions to your individual measurements to ensure natural and safe results. During your consultation, it can be helpful to bring in “goal” photos of other breast augmentations to give your surgeon a better understanding of what look you want.

We also use Crisalix 3D Imaging, a program that uses your measurements to generate a 3-dimensional image that will show what you might look like with the implants you selected. Remember, this is a tool to assist you in your decision and not a guarantee of your outcome.

Implant profile

An implant’s profile refers to the distance that it projects from the body related to its width at the base. High-profile implants are well-suited to petite women with narrow builds who seek larger volumes because the implant bases will fit better on a smaller chest. Medium- or low-profile implants are often better choices for women with wider frames who seek to minimize excessive breast volume. We will help you find an implant that enhances your breasts beautifully while still maintaining their proportion to the rest of your figure.

Implant material

Breast implants are available in both silicone and saline varieties. Both materials come with their advantages, and what works for one woman may not be the best match for another.

Silicone:

  • Made of soft, cohesive silicone gel
  • Look and feel more natural than saline
  • Show less rippling under the skin in women with little existing breast tissue
  • Available in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and projections
  • Safe (both Canada’s Health Protection Branch and the United States Food and Drug Administration have carefully determined that they’re just as safe as saline)

Saline:

  • Use sterile saltwater encased in a thin, durable, silicone shell
  • Use small incisions (inserted into the body while empty and only filled once in place)
  • Not ideal for women with very little existing breast tissue (they run a slightly higher risk of “rippling,” a cosmetic complication that occurs when the implant wrinkles within the breast pocket and can be seen through the skin)

Implant shape

Both saline and silicone breast implants are round or teardrop-shaped. The right option for you depends on a number of factors, which Dr. Silverman and Dr. Boyd will discuss during your consultation.

Round:

  • Add an equal amount of volume around the entire circumference of the breast
  • Provide a significant boost in cleavage and fullness in the upper portion of the breast for a voluptuous final result.
  • Will retain their shape even if rotation occurs

Who are the best candidates for Breast Implants?

We generally like to work with patients who are healthy, have realistic goals in mind, are non-smokers, have no major underlying issues, and are seeking a way to enhance their bust with natural-looking implants. We assess each patient individually to determine whether this is the right procedure for you. Breast Implants change your appearance and perspective on your body, and we discuss this result with you so you know what to expect.

Finding the Right Implants For You

What’s the first step?

The first step to getting Breast Implants in Ottawa is to book a consultation with one of our providers at Ottawa Plastic Surgery. During your consultation, our surgeons carefully evaluate the dimensions of your body and make it their mission to give you the most natural-looking and attractive results. You can call us directly or contact us on our website. Our patient coordinators are ready to help you and get you started on your journey.

By scheduling an initial consultation, you will meet with one of our surgeons, learn more about our Breast Implant Options, and decide which of our surgical procedures is the right one for you.

Before your surgery, your surgeon will give you a set of pre-operative instructions to prepare you for the procedure. This may include abstaining from blood thinners or fasting for a certain amount of time.

What to expect on the day of Surgery

On the day of your Breast Implant surgery in Ottawa, you will first meet with your surgeon who will discuss the details of your procedure. Then, you will meet with the Anesthesiologist who will ask you some medical questions and administer a type of anesthesia to minimize pain and discomfort.

Next, your surgeon will begin making the incision on your breasts. The type of incision used will vary depending on the type of procedure that will be performed. The implants will be placed exactly as determined and discussed by your surgeon in the consultation. Your doctor will make adjustments to the placement, and size of your breasts as needed.

Once the new implants are in place, the final step is to close the incision using sutures.

As your surgeon completes the procedure, you will be taken into a recovery room while the anesthesia wears off.

We advise every breast implant patient to arrange for transportation to and from the practice on the day of their appointment.

Breast Implant Recovery

Following your surgery, gauze dressings or bandages may be applied to your incisions. Depending on the details of your surgery, you may or may not be placed in a support bra or other type of garment. In some cases, a small, thin tube may be temporarily placed under the skin to drain any excess blood or fluid that may collect.

Before leaving our practice, your assigned surgical team will carefully go over all your recovery steps and instructions, so you know what to expect. Some of the instructions may include:

  • Keeping the wound clean at home
  • Type of medications needed to manage pain
  • Activities to avoid in the immediate aftermath
  • Clothing to avoid while in the healing stage
  • What to look out for on your wound each day
  • When to schedule your follow-up appointments.

You can expect to see swelling and some pain in the initial days and weeks of your recovery. Healing will continue for several weeks as swelling decreases, and it can take up to a couple of months to completely heal.
