Brazilian Butt Lift

For a fuller, curvier figure, you can now round out the buttocks through Brazilian butt lift surgery. At Ottawa Plastic Surgery, women and men from Gatineau, Cornwall, and beyond choose our plastic surgeons Dr. Howard Silverman and Dr. Kirsty Boyd for their experience and aesthetic skill. Because the procedure relies on fat transfer, patients have the dual benefit of losing fat from an unwanted location such as the "love handles," thighs, or hips and adding new volume to the buttocks.

Understanding Brazilian Butt Lift

The Brazilian butt lift is essentially a fat transfer procedure. Whenever fat transfer is involved, there are 3 elements of the procedure that make it successful:

  1. Suctioning the fat from its original location through liposuction
  2. Purifying the fat to reduce any extraneous fluid or damaged fat cells
  3. Injecting the fat in its new location

The liposuction element of the procedure gives patients, who visit from Kingston, Brockville, Belleville, and other Ontario cities, the opportunity to sculpt a second area of the body in order to create a new contour for the buttocks. Common choices include the thighs, abdomen, flanks, arms, back, and hips. Once this fat has been purified, your surgeon injects it through thin streams (also called threads) to the areas of the buttocks that will benefit most from additional volume.

Inevitably, some of the fat will be re-absorbed by the body. However, the thin stream technique maximizes blood flow to the newly injected fat, which makes the body more likely to assimilate it and retain the additional volume.

Our surgeons have an aesthetic sensibility honed through years of body contouring experience. This enables them to create a rounded, lifted shape that suits your goals, enhancing your silhouette in an artful way that helps you feel more attractive and confident.

Good Candidates for Brazilian Butt Lift

Brazilian butt lift surgery is somewhat unique among common plastic surgery procedures in that it repositions your own tissue to get the results you want. We all have fat -- and because it's already a soft material from your own body, it yields a natural-looking result. The best candidates for Brazilian butt lift share these criteria:

  • They have unwanted fat.
  • They would like to see more volume in their buttocks.
  • They are at or near their desired weight.

Exceptionally thin people with very little excess fat may not be good candidates, because the procedure depends on having enough fat available to harvest. In such a case, your surgeon may recommend a buttock lift, which tightens and reshapes the area without the use of fat.

What to Expect

At your initial consultation with Dr. Silverman or Dr. Boyd, you have the chance to discuss the places from which you would like to see fat harvested, as well as the volume of fat that will lead to the ideal outcome. Your surgeon examines your body, listens to your goals, and determines your eligibility for the procedure.

On the day of surgery, you will be given a general anesthetic, after which your surgeon will proceed with harvesting fat from the donor sites and injecting it in the buttocks.

After your procedure, you will experience some soreness, swelling, and bruising at both the area where fat was harvested and the area where it was injected into the buttocks. Not all of the fat will be assimilated successfully, but additional volume that remains after 3 months will be long lasting. For smooth, even results, patients are asked to wear a compression garment for the first few weeks following surgery.

After 1 to 2 weeks, patients are typically fine to return to work, with the caveat that they should avoid sitting for extended periods if possible. Returning to vigorous exercise takes a bit longer, generally around 3 weeks. Your surgeon can counsel you on a specific timeline as it relates to your fitness routine.

Most patients find that the majority of swelling fades within a few weeks, and they can begin enjoying their newly enhanced contours and curves.
