Upper Eyelid Sugery

Introduction

For many men and women, the area around the eyes is often one of the first to show signs of aging, often giving off the appearance of being tired and/or sad. Like all other plastic surgery procedures, there is no one-size-fits-all approach and each patient is treated on an individual basis. At Ottawa Plastic Surgery, we use Upper Eyelid Surgery to treat the upper eyelids by removing excess skin and fat from around the eyes. To learn more about this treatment and to find out if you’re a good candidate, please keep reading below!

What is Upper Eyelid Surgery?

At our esteemed practice in Ottawa, Upper Eyelid Surgery (also referred to as Upper Blepharoplasty) is a procedure that involves the resection of redundant skin and/or musculature of the upper eyelids. While they can be (and often are) performed together, this procedure is distinct from a brow lift in that it focuses solely on the trimming of skin, as opposed to elevating your eyebrows.

Upper blepharoplasty is performed for cosmetic reasons, specifically reducing the signs of aging. If you suffer from ptosis of the upper eyelid (which means that the margin of the eyelid sits too low and covers the pupil due to poor muscular function), you may require a separate surgery called ptosis repair.

First steps of a Upper Eyelid Sugery

What’s the first step?

The first step in getting Upper Eyelid Surgery in Ottawa with either Dr. Silverman, Dr. Boyd, Dr. Frank, or Dr. Cormier will be to book a consultation. The surgeons will want to fully explain the procedure to you, provide an assessment of eyelids, and detail their expert recommendations. You will be asked about your medical history, during which time it is very important to be open and honest as it will help prevent any unnecessary risks. If you and your surgeon both feel that this is the best solution for your aesthetic needs, surgery will be booked and we’ll provide you with some instructions to follow before your procedure that should ensure the best outcome.

What to Expect on the Day of Upper Eyelid Surgery

When you come in for your Upper Eyelid Surgery, we will make sure you are comfortable with the use of local or general anesthesia. Your plastic surgeon will begin the procedure by identifying the upper eyelid crease on each eyelid and designing a skin excision that removes enough skin to alleviate the issue and preserves enough to allow normal eyelid closure. In some cases, this could involve a small amount of the orbicularis oculi (the muscle that closes the eyelid) being removed. Fat is typically preserved over the middle of the eyelid, but some removal may help with the aesthetic contour in cosmetic eyelid surgery. When the procedure is complete, the eyelid is closed with sutures. The incision should lie in the eyelid crease, making it less visible after healing.

Upper Eyelid Surgery Recovery

After surgery, avoid touching your eyes, swimming, and strenuous activity for the first week. You will be able to wear your glasses immediately after your surgery, but you will need to avoid wearing contact lenses for at least 2 weeks following surgery. You must be diligent with sun protection and wear dark sunglasses until you are fully healed.

In the first stages of your recovery, you may experience discomfort, swelling, and dry eyes. This can be managed by supplied ointment and cold compresses. Bruising and swelling should completely subside 2 weeks post-surgery. Upper eyelid surgery recovery is quite rapid with mild swelling and bruising.

Upper Eyelid Surgery For Men

As one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures for men, Male blepharoplasty may have some of the similar principles of a female’s eyelid surgery but requires a different approach. Our surgeons will take the shape, height, and contour of your eyebrows and eyelids into consideration to avoid a more feminine look.

The differences in approach to male blepharoplasty are largely based on the features of a male face and male eyelid, requiring a separate approach. These factors include:

The eyelid crease, the natural fold of skin in the upper eyelid, is often lower in men than in women.

The eyelids are frequently fuller and the brows are typically slightly lower in men. When male blepharoplasty is performed, we typically remove less skin, and often also have to perform brow lifting procedures simultaneously to get the best results.
