Lower Eyelid Surgery

Introduction

No two people are the same – even identical twins have certain characteristics and physical attributes that make them unique. When it comes to the face, especially among patients of different ethnicities, there are unique anatomical differences in the eyelid’s anatomy. Double eyelid surgery is a customized approach to address these anatomical differences, particularly in patients of Asian ethnicity to create or deepen the upper eyelid fold to rejuvenate the appearance of the eyes.

At Ottawa Plastic Surgery, our extremely talented and experienced plastic surgeons have helped many of our Asian patients who desire a double fold in the eyelid achieve the eyelids they’ve always desired. If your eyelids are causing you discomfort, difficulty seeing, or even not meeting your desired aesthetics, this could be an eye-opening procedure! To learn more about it and learn if you could be a good candidate, please keep reading below.

What is Lower Eyelid Surgery?

At our esteemed practice in Ottawa, eyelid surgery (also referred to as blepharoplasty) is our go-to cosmetic eye surgery. Lower Eyelid Surgery is a type of surgery that removes excess skin from the eyelids. This can be performed on both the upper eyelid as well as the lower. Blepharoplasty is usually done in an outpatient setting. You will most likely be given drugs such as injections into the eyelids to numb them, as well as drugs through an IV to help you relax.

The main reason patients choose lower eyelid surgery is to eliminate the look of bags under the eyes. This can come with age or genetics, but our surgery can remove the excess fatty tissue, improving and smoothing the skin around the area drastically.

What are the benefits of Eyelid Surgery?

Lower Eyelid Surgery in Ottawa can especially be beneficial to address the following issues:

  • Loose or sagging skin that creates folds or disturbs the natural contour of the upper eyelid, sometimes impairing vision.
  • Fatty deposits that appear as puffiness in the eyelids
  • Bags under the eyes
  • Drooping lower eyelids that reveal white below the iris
  • Excess skin and fine wrinkles of the lower eyelid

The overall effect is to give your eyes a makeover that enables you to look younger and refreshed. There may be other areas of concern you can discuss with our team of plastic surgeons if you are thinking about Lower Eyelid Surgery.

Who are the best candidates for Eyelid Surgery?

Ottawa Lower Eyelid surgery is a delicate procedure that may not be suitable for everyone. Typically, these are the following traits we look for when evaluating patients as good candidates for Blepharoplasty:

  • Healthy individuals with no medical conditions that can impair healing
  • Nonsmokers
  • Individuals with a positive outlook and realistic goals
  • Individuals without serious eye conditions

Drooping eyelids or sagging skin can also be related to issues elsewhere on the face, such as the forehead, which our surgeons will assess before giving you the green light. Every lower eyelid surgery patient is evaluated individually to assess whether they are a good candidate.

First steps of a Lower Eyelid Surgery

What’s the first step?

The first step to getting Lower Eyelid Surgery in Ottawa is to book a consultation with one of our superstar surgeons at Ottawa Plastic Surgery. You can call us directly or contact us on our website. Our patient coordinators are ready to help you and get you started on your journey. By scheduling a consultation, you will meet with one of our surgeons, learn more about what Lower Eyelid Surgery involves, and decide whether this is the right procedure for you.

What to expect on the day of Lower Eyelid Surgery

Before the day of your surgery, you may be instructed to fast for a certain amount of time or avoid certain medications, to prep your body for the procedure. On the day of your appointment, while you are being prepped for surgery, your assigned surgeon will walk you through the procedure and techniques they will be using, as discussed in your consultation.

The first step in the surgery process is for the surgeon to administer a type of anesthesia to minimize discomfort and pain. The second step is to make the incision on the lower eyelids where your surgeon will focus their attention. The incision lines for lower eyelid surgery are designed so the resultant scars will be well concealed within the natural structures of the lower eyelid region.

The lower eyelid incision is usually made just below the eyelash line to appear natural. Once the incision is made, the fatty tissue will be removed.

The third step is to close the incision on the eyelids. Lower Eyelid incisions typically are closed with sutures or skin glue. Sutures are removed within one week. Once the surgical component is complete, your medical team will move you into an area to rest and recover, before returning home. Because of the delicate nature of this surgery, you will require help getting to and from the clinic, as your vision will be impaired with bandages during recovery.

Your surgeon may also suggest the use of a laser or chemical peel to reduce discoloration of the lower eyelids.

Lower Eyelid Surgery recovery

During the recovery period from lower eyelid surgery, it is very important to rest and avoid strenuous activities, especially looking at a screen for too long. Most patients are given gauze to cover the eyes after surgery, which allows for a better healing process and prevents any intrusion into the surgical area.

Bruising and swelling generally lessen slowly in about 10 to 14 days. Scars from the surgical cuts may take months to fade. Take care to protect your delicate eyelid skin from sun exposure.

Your assigned surgeon and our medical team will ensure you are given a detailed list of do’s and don’ts during your recovery period.

It is advisable to use a cool compress to gently press onto the eyes if you experience discomfort, you can also use over-the-counter medication to alleviate pain. You should wear sunglasses for any outdoor activities.
