Rhinoplasty

Every nose is different - some are big, some are small, and some are crooked or have multiple curves. Regardless of their appearance, the nose serves an important purpose in both appearance and functionality. While everyone has one, some patients aren’t pleased with the look of their noses, believing they would be more confident with alteration to better suit their aesthetic desires. As one of the most individualized procedures in plastic surgery, Rhinoplasty has become popular across the world in every culture. At Ottawa Plastic Surgery, we strive to provide our patients with results that not only improve their appearance but allow them to breathe a little easier.

description

What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, also known as a “nose job” in some circles, is a surgical procedure that is designed to reshape and enhance the appearance of your nose. At Ottawa Plastic Surgery, Rhinoplasty is a highly customizable procedure that can address a variety of concerns, including altering the size, shape, proportion, and symmetry of the nose.

Patients who seek smaller changes in their nose, like correcting a drooping tip or dorsal hump, can be treated with a Closed Rhinoplasty (i.e. incisions limited to the inside of the nostrils), but when patients need larger or more complicated changes, Open Rhinoplasty is used. Either technique can be used for nose reshaping, with the skin elevated and the nasal bones and cartilage altered. Rhinoplasty can also include septoplasty, turbinate reduction, and removal of deviated bone from the inside of your nose.

During the procedure, your plastic surgeon will carefully modify the bone, cartilage, and soft tissues of your nose to achieve the desired outcome, with natural-looking results and overall facial harmony.

What to Expect on the Day of Rhinoplasty Surgery

On the day of your Rhinoplasty procedure at Ottawa Plastic Surgery, you can expect a carefully planned and personalized experience that prioritizes your comfort. You will first be administered anesthesia to ensure your surgery goes smoothly with no pain.

Your surgeon will then perform the Rhinoplasty procedure, using the appropriate techniques based on your unique nasal shape and desired outcomes. This may involve making incisions on the columella or inside the nostrils to access the nasal structures and reshape the bone, cartilage, and tissue of your nose.

If a closed procedure technique is utilized, the incisions will be hidden inside your nose, whereas an open procedure will require an incision to be made across the narrow strip of tissue that separates your nostrils, which is called the columella.

Nasal packing and splints may be used to provide support and maintain the new shape of your nose.

The surgery can take anywhere between one and three hours, depending on the extent of correction required.

Rhinoplasty Recovery

Surgical Rhinoplasty is an outpatient procedure, which means our patients can rest and recover comfortably in their homes on the same day of their nose surgery.

You can expect your initial recovery to take between one and two weeks, with some bruising and swelling around the eyes and cheeks, along with some mild discomfort. Due to the swelling, patients may temporarily notice blocked nasal passages and congestion, which will diminish on its own as the nose begins to heal. As you recover, it’s important to rest, keep your head elevated, and avoid strenuous activities for the first week to achieve the best results. Most visible swelling will fade over the first five to seven days, although residual swelling can last for 12 to 18 months.

Patients normally feel well enough to return to work after 10 – 14 days. You can gradually return to normal activities over the next three weeks, and return to more strenuous activities after four to six weeks. Eventually, your breathing will begin to improve, but it may take about a year for your nose to settle into its final contour as minor residual swelling resolves and the skin envelope continues to contract.

After eight weeks, the nasal bones and cartilage will have healed together, and you can return to unrestricted activities. During this time, you will notice improved nasal and facial contours as the postoperative swelling continues to fade.

Rhinoplasty FAQ’s

  • Is Rhinoplasty painful?

Most patients report mild discomfort rather than pain during and after a Rhinoplasty procedure. Before the surgery, anesthesia is administered to ensure your comfort. After the procedure, you may experience some swelling, and bruising, which can be managed with temporarily prescribed pain medication. It’s important to note that we take the utmost care to minimize any potential pain for our patients, ensuring a comfortable experience.

  • How many appointments will I need?

After your Rhinoplasty, you should expect to return in about five to seven days post-surgery so we may remove any bandages, nasal splints, and/or stitches, as well as monitor your initial recovery period. After this initial follow-up, you will need to return a few more times over the coming months. Most patients can expect between three and four check-up appointments in total. You will always be informed of when you’re expected to return at the end of each appointment.

  • How long until I see results?

It can take about 7 – 10 days for the initial bruising and swelling from a nose job to begin to subside. After about two weeks, most patients feel that the swelling has subsided enough that other people cannot tell that they have had surgery.

Swelling will persist for months, however, so patients, their families, and close friends will continue to notice resolution of the swelling and improvement in the contour over the first three to six months. Patients will continue to see improvements in shape and airflow for about one year after surgery.

  • Can I combine Rhinoplasty with other procedures?

Absolutely! Many of our Rhinoplasty patients will combine their procedure with other cosmetic plastic surgeries such as a Chin Implant, Blepharoplasty, or Brow Lift to achieve the facial profile they want. If you have a specific area of interest or aesthetic goal that you would like to achieve, please discuss them during your consultation. We will be more than happy to provide our expert suggestions after examining your face and body.

  • What are the risks associated with Rhinoplasty?

There are always potential risks or side effects associated with any invasive surgical procedure, and nose surgery is no different, even with a skilled Rhinoplasty surgeon. Some of these risks include:

    • Anesthesia risks
    • Change in skin sensation (numbness or pain)
    • Difficulty breathing
    • Infection
    • Nasal septal perforation (a hole in the nasal septum) is rare. Additional surgical treatment may be necessary to repair the septum but it may be impossible to correct this complication
    • Poor wound healing or scarring
    • Possibility of a revisional rhinoplasty
    • Skin discoloration and prolonged swelling
    • If you do have any long-lasting or concerning reactions during your recovery, please contact us immediately.

Please contact Ottawa Plastic Surgery immediately if you are experiencing any of these symptoms.
