Ottawa Facelift (rhytidectomy) Procedure
Facelifts focus on the bottom two-thirds of the face, and smooth out cheek and nose wrinkles, decrease the fold between the outer lips and nose, minimize jowls, and enhance the contour of the neck and jaw.
Your surgeon will begin by making an incision along your hairline, near your temple. Incisions are carefully placed so that the resulting scars will be hidden in your hair, natural ear creases, or behind your ears. The muscle and tissue under the skin are tightened for a more youthful contour, and then the skin is resuspended and the excess removed. An exciting new development in facial enhancement and rejuvenation is the addition of facial fat grafting, often done during a face and neck lift to re-inflate and rejuvenate deflated and sagging facial soft tissues, including the lips.
While all patients are different, a traditional facelift takes approximately 4-5 hours to complete.
Ottawa Neck lift (platysmaplasty) Procedure
This procedure is usually performed in conjunction with a facelift. This may involve making an incision under the chin or through the facelift incisions around the ears, enabling your plastic surgeon to lift the neck higher. The excess skin and muscles are then elevated to tighten the neck contour to create a natural, more youthful appearance. Liposuction may also be added to reduce excess fat if present.
Recovery time varies, but you can expect to take it easy for 10 days after surgery. We suggest taking this time off to recover and to keep activity levels light. During your recovery, it’s important to move around and get the blood flowing, but also essential not to overdo it.
You will be swollen and you may notice that the swelling peaks on your third or fourth day of recovery. This is completely normal. Expect swelling to go down after about 2 weeks.

Facelift Frequently asked questions
- Should I get a facelift and neck lift or fillers?
There are cases where the soft tissues of the face and neck cannot be adequately addressed with fillers. For concerns beyond lines and wrinkles, a face and neck lift will provide more thorough results. Minimally invasive treatments such as BOTOX®️ Cosmetic, Restylane, and JUVÉDERM can help extend the life of a facelift by addressing new wrinkles as they form.
- Can my facelift and neck lift be combined with other procedures?
Yes! Dr. Silverman can combine this procedure with other facial surgeries, like eyelid surgery, brow surgery, facial fat grafting, or other relatively minor additions. However, face and neck lift surgery are complex, and adding substantial secondary procedures, such as breast or body contouring, is best done as a separate procedure once fully recovered.
- How long will my results last?
Facelift results are not permanent, but they are long-lasting and typically may set the clock back 10 to 15 years!
- Is there a non-surgical solution?
We do have a non-surgical department at our clinic that is masterful in noninvasive techniques. Depending on the patient’s aesthetic goals, at times we do recommend non-surgical options. However, for many of our patients, a facelift is the only way to achieve their desired results. It’s a revolutionary surgery and there is not a noninvasive procedure that can provide the same detail, results, or surgical longevity.
- What’s the best age for a facelift?
While most of our patients are between the ages of 40 and 60, patients can be in their 30s and older than 60. One of the most important aspects of the surgery is the quality of the patient’s skin. Skin quality plays a large role in the procedure and how effective the surgeons can be. For younger patients, other options like a mid-facelift or mini facelift may be recommended. The best way to find out what’s right for you is to schedule a consultation.
