Microneedling

Introduction

As we get older, the most prominent area on our body that shows signs of aging is our skin. Whether environmental factors or genetics, skin aging is a big concern for many people who want to look and feel their best. The good news is that there are a range of options that can help reverse the signs of aging and restore your youthful glow, all without going under the knife. A popular procedure to treat common skin issues is Microneedling – a minimally invasive procedure using thin needles. The procedure can help reduce the appearance of skin concerns such as acne scars, stretch marks, or wrinkles. Most people get microneedling for cosmetic purposes, but it can also help with some medical conditions. If you are considering Microneedling in Ottawa, ON, come and see the team at Ottawa Plastic Surgery.

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that treats skin concerns by stimulating collagen production. It can help smooth, firm, and tone skin and improve the appearance of scars, acne, and wrinkles. This treatment aims to generate new collagen and skin tissue to smooth, firm, and tone skin. The skin’s healing process after microneedling can help reduce the appearance of scars and dark spots and improve skin elasticity. Microneedling is said to rejuvenate and plump the skin with minimal discomfort and downtime, and it can be adjusted to fit each person’s needs.

What are the benefits of Microneedling?

Microneedling has gained popularity for its growing list of benefits. Microneedling can improve:

  • the appearance of scars, including acne scars, fine lines, and wrinkles
  • enlarged pores
  • the appearance of hyperpigmentation, or dark spots
  • uneven skin tone
  • skin elasticity
  • the appearance of stretch marks
  • hair growth in people with alopecia

Be sure to give us a call and schedule a consultation with one of our specialists to discuss how needling can benefit you.

Who are the best candidates for Microneedling?

Microneedling is less expensive than laser therapy and may work better for some people. Laser treatments involve heat, which can affect skin pigmentation. People with darker skin tones may prefer microneedling to laser therapy because of safety concerns associated with certain types of laser treatments on skin of color. If you are looking to treat skin conditions such as pigmentation, acne scars, and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and are generally in good health, you might be a good candidate for microneedling.

First steps of a Microneedling

What’s the first step?

The first step to getting Microneedling in Ottawa is to book a consultation with one of our providers at Ottawa Plastic Surgery. Our patient coordinators are ready to help you and get you started on your journey. By scheduling a consultation, you will meet with one of our surgeons, learn more about what Microneedling involves, and decide whether this is the right procedure for you.

What to expect on the day of Microneedling

Prior to the day of your treatment, your provider may give you instructions to prepare your skin, such as avoiding certain topical ointments or lotions.

On the day of your appointment, your assigned provider will first prepare the treatment area by cleansing the skin and applying a numbing ointment, allowing 30-45 minutes for the ointment to set in.

Next, your provider uses a hand-held roller or an electric tool to make the wounds in your skin. The roller has tiny needles. Your provider rolls it slowly and gently across your skin. If they use the electric device, needles pulse up and down to puncture your skin. They can change the length of the needles on the electric device. Longer needles go deeper into your skin, which might be necessary if you have deep scars or pockmarks from acne. Needle lengths can range from 0.5 millimeters to 2 millimeters.

You might feel warmth or a scratching sensation on your face once the microneedling starts. Some people feel discomfort if the needles are near bony areas, such as your cheekbones. Deep microneedling might cause a little bleeding. A microneedling procedure can take anywhere from 15 minutes to a few hours, depending on the size of the area that needs treatment.

Microneedling recovery

Microneedling isn’t as invasive as plastic surgery, with minimal recovery time. Most people require minimal downtime, if any at all. You may notice skin irritation and redness within the first few days of the procedure. This is a natural response to the minor “injuries” made by the needles in your skin.

Most patients can return to work or school after the procedure. It’s best to let your skin heal before applying makeup. Your skin will also be more sensitive to the sun, so be sure to apply sunscreen. Our team of specialists recommends waiting one week before exposing your skin to sunlight or harsh chemicals. Taking care of your skin after microneedling is the most effective way to see lasting results.
