A tummy tuck, also referred to as abdominoplasty, is one of the most popular plastic surgeries we perform, the results of which are often some of the most dramatic and transformative we see.
Tummy tuck surgery can reduce excess skin and fat on the abdomen, and correct muscle laxity. Whether these changes have developed after surgery or weight fluctuation, pregnancy or as a result of the natural aging process, a tummy tuck can correct excess loose skin, fatty tissue, or protrusion of the lower abdomen due to laxity in the stomach muscles for a firmer, more toned appearance.
If you’re considering a tummy tuck, you probably have many questions. That’s why we’ve taken the time to answer some of the most common patient questions about the procedure, from how much it costs, to why patients choose it, and what you can expect the day of your surgery.
A tummy tuck (or abdominoplasty) is a procedure to reduce both fat and stretched skin, as well as repair damaged and stretched abdominal muscles that may be bulging outward.
Liposuction is a cosmetic surgery in which localized deposits of fat are removed through a vacuum-suction tube inserted under the skin. Fat is permanently removed from specific areas of the body to reveal beautiful, sleek body contours. If you’re concerned about both excess fat and loose skin, liposuction can be combined with a tummy tuck during a single procedure.
The best candidates for a tummy tuck are close to their ideal body weight, but have unique changes to their body that are not successfully managed by diet or exercise alone. Excellent candidates are also in good physical health, and have clear expectations about their results.
When we undergo changes – whether as a result of pregnancy or a drastic weight loss – it can be frustrating to reach a point where diet and exercise no longer have an impact. Many patients we see are seeking to renew their self-confidence; they’re looking to feel like the best versions of themselves!
While many non-surgical skin tightening options have entered the scene in recent years, a tummy tuck is still the most precise way to remove both fat and excess skin. In addition, if the abdominal muscles are stretched and damaged, this underlying issue cannot be corrected non-surgically. Depending on the amount of excess skin that requires removal, some patients may not see results from these modalities, or may not be viable candidates, which can lead to disappointment. In addition, you will only have to undergo surgery once to achieve final results, whereas non-surgical options often require several treatments and results can take weeks or months to appear.
Tummy tuck surgery at Ottawa Plastic Surgery is typically an outpatient procedure. We usually tell patients to expect the procedure to take 3 to 4 hours total. This includes check-in, set-up time, the surgery itself, as well as some time in the recovery room.
The results of a tummy tuck can last indefinitely. As long as you maintain a stable weight and healthy lifestyle, you’ll enjoy your results for many years to come.
Tummy tuck recovery is different for everyone, and depends on your individual response to surgery, but we recommend that you take about 2 weeks off from work to give yourself some time to rest and heal. You should have someone available to drive you home and stay with you for at least 2 days following surgery. It’s normal to experience mild to moderate pain, bruising and mild swelling immediately after surgery. Pain management options will be discussed with you, and we’ll explain how to care for your surgical incisions to ensure optimal recovery and comfort. Although you should restrict your activity for the first 1 to 2 weeks following surgery, it’s important to begin walking soon after your procedure to promote tummy tuck recovery and healing. You can gradually resume more activity in the subsequent weeks, with most patients returning to exercise after just 6 weeks.
Tummy tuck surgery involves incisions, which do inevitably turn into scars. The procedure results in a horizontal scar above the bikini line, extending across the lower abdomen. The length of the scar depends on the amount of excess skin being removed, but most patients who are candidates will have a scar that extends from hip to hip, as well as a second scar hidden within the belly button. No matter the size, every effort is made to ensure incisions are very fine, and easily concealed within your preferred style of undergarments or swimwear.
