The BOTOX® lip flip.

In Ottawa

By Dr. Howard Silverman

When you think of lip enhancement, you likely think of dermal fillers, while BOTOX® is usually associated with smoothing foreheads and erasing crow’s feet. But did you know there’s a treatment that harnesses the power of Botox for more subtle lip enhancement? The Botox lip flip has been steadily gaining popularity with our patients. Let us tell you why.

What is a BOTOX® lip flip?

As the name implies, a lip flip uses Botox (or another neuromodulator like XEOMIN®) to enhance the upper lip. The neuromodulator is strategically injected in very small quantities just above the upper lip—into the orbicularis oris muscle—to temporarily relax the muscle and allow the lip to roll (or “flip”) slightly upward. This muscle relaxation causes the upper lip to appear more voluminous and defined, and can also help to smooth vertical lines around the lips.

The procedure takes less than ten minutes from start to finish, and the results are subtle. The goal is to relax the muscle fibres enough to flip the lip without affecting the function of the muscle; that’s why it’s so important that the procedure be performed by a qualified, experienced injectable artist. It takes a high level of skill to achieve the right effect without overtreating, which could limit your ability to properly move your mouth, suck on a straw, eat, and speak.

A lip flip uses four to six units of neuromodulator, and most patients notice the effects within a few days. Full results appear after about two weeks, and last approximately six weeks.

How does a lip flip differ from lip injections?

Lip injections add volume to the lips, making them larger, whereas a lip flip only creates the illusion of added volume by allowing more of the upper lip to become visible.

A Botox lip flip can be an excellent alternative to lip injections if you’d like your lips to appear fuller without adding volume, if you feel your upper lip “disappears” when you smile, or if you’d like to try a more short term solution (since dermal fillers can last anywhere from six months to a year). Alternatively, if you are looking to add volume to your upper and/or lower lip, improve overall shape and symmetry, address more severe vertical lip lines, or if you’re looking for a longer lasting enhancement, lip injections might be a more suitable solution.

In some cases, the two treatments can be combined. Our injectable artists will consider your natural lip anatomy, desired outcome, and personal preferences to help you decide which treatment is right for you.

How much does a lip flip cost?

When you add-on this option to your regular Botox or dermal filler treatment at Ottawa Plastic Surgery, the cost of a Botox lip flip ranges from $48 to $72.

If you are interested in only receiving a Botox lip flip, please note that our minimum injectable treatment fee of $150 will apply.
